Exclusive Interview with Marco Bailey

1. Hello, Marco Bailey! First of all I want to thank you for your kindness and your time. 2011 is almost over, how does look this year for you so far?

It has been quite Great! I had the release of my album ‘Dragon Man’ on John Digweed’s Bedrock Label. I have been playing lots of great festivals like Global Gathering UK, Extrema in Belgium, Nature One in Germany, and Maniac Beach in Japan.

I also did my first own night in Ibiza Cristian varela’s ‘pornographic party’ at EDEN in San Antonio, Ibiza.

2. You are one of the best producers of techo music, what musical background have you got?

Yes, It has been a long time since I started in 1988… playing Rock, Funk, Hip-Hop and New Wave… So from U2 to Dave Ball to the Stooges to Public Enemy, to James Brown and John Guitar Watson and many other genres of Music.

3. Tell us 5 songs that represents you.

1. ‘Ipanema’ on Zync records in the 90′s.

2. ‘Play it back’ on INTEC in 2001.

3. ‘Jungle Laps’ on Bedrock in 2009, which is NO 1 in Techno Beatport charts.

4. ‘Rude Boy’ Album on Mb elektronics in 2004.

5. ‘Dragon Man’ Album on Bedrock in 2011.

4. Regarding your producer skills, what are the main influences? How do you get inspired when you produce a track?

When I create Techno I try to exemplify a climax in each track something what entails making masses of people going crazy on the dance floor at all times! When I make downtempo music, which I also love to produce, I get mostly inspired by my favorite producers all times: such as Boards of Canada.

5. What defines a good producer and what direction is techno music heading in? Who are some of the DJs or producers you currently appreciate?

I know techno is healthy again!! Great producers I like currently are: Gary Beck, Jamie Jones, Tom Hades, Netsky, Soren Aalberg… so you have here producers in 3 different styles of music.

6. Talking of producing, can you describe your studio?

Big Apple computer, 2 mackie speakers, lots of hardware that I almost don`t use anymore… VIRUS T! That one, yes its amazing, Nordlead, DVJ 2080, Planet phat, Orbit, Sherman Filterbanks etc. etc.

7. Between music production and DJ-ing, which one is your priority?

DJ because it was my first love and it always will be.

8. What is your opinion about house music nowdays from its quality point of view?

Going great!

9. What are the influences of your style as a DJ, where do you fit? How would you describe your sets?

Funky Techy cutting edge techno sets, with now and then a housy tune.

10. Your favourite producer at the moment.

To many… :) )

11. Who would you like to remix your music?

I am looking forward to one day hopefully remixing a song of my favorite band all times U2 (‘All I need is you’), Depeche Mode (‘Behind The Wheel’), Boards of Canada (‘Music has the right to children’) or maybe a Chemical Brothers track… :)

12. Which was the best event that you have mixed for?

Mayday in Dortmund Germany, Ageha in Tokyo and Space Ibiza.

13. There is a place where you have not had the opportunity to mix, but you really wanted?

Yes: Warung Beach club in Brazil or Coachella festival in USA… but also Krystal club in Bucharest or Studio Martin!

14. What equipment do you use? What do you prefer for mixing: Laptop / CDJs? Why?

I like to play nowedays with Traktor because of all his EFX you can do… but also with the SD card with the CDJ2000 is also cool!

15. Favourite piece of equipment / gadget.

Mixer djm 900 nexus pioneer.

16. Please recommend some ‘must listen’ tracks to our readers.

17. What can we expect from you in the near future?

Lots of release for my baby on my MB ELEKTRONICS label! New eps ‘Oriental Concept’ John Digweed’s Bedrock records out 12/12/11 and new ep on Carl Cox his INTEC records!

19. Do you have a message for all the people out there who love electronic music?

DON`T SHOUT COMMENTS TO OTHER ARTISTS, LOOK FIRST IF YOU CAN DO BETTER BY YOURSELF, AND GO YOUR OWN WAY. DON`T LOOK AT WHAT OTHER DJS OR PRODUCERS DO, BECAUSE ITS HYPE… BE YOURSELF!
